Annual Race in DeLand, FL Raises Funds to Support Cancer Patients in Need
Bradenton, Fla., August 3, 2022 — The Florida Cancer Specialists (FCS) Foundation (FCSF) is honored to be the charitable recipient of the annual ‘ME STRONG 5K’ race in DeLand, Florida, the area’s largest and most successful fundraising run for the benefit of cancer patients and cancer research. The ME STRONG 5k originated IN 2011, when Linda Ryan was diagnosed with recurrent cervical cancer. Her four close friends, Barbara McCallan, Kim Winters, Kim Martin and Kathy Guyer, organized a 5K race event that would reflect Linda’s kind spirit, passion for healthy living and determination to persevere. The inaugural ME STRONG 5k was highly successful and ignited a ray of hope for community members who had been touched by cancer.
Since that first race, the ME STRONG 5k has continued to grow in popularity, thanks to broad community support and participation of partners and sponsors, including longtime title sponsor Florida Cancer Specialists & Research Institute (FCS) and community partner The Rotary Clubs of West Volusia. The 2020 event, held prior to COVID, attracted nearly 6,000 participants and hundreds of spectators! To date, more than $2 Million has been raised for those battling cancer in need of financial assistance and to support groundbreaking research in search of a cure.
In a recent letter to supporters, the five women founders stated, “We are thrilled to announce the 2023 ME STRONG 5K “United in Strength” will be held Saturday, February 4, 2023, thanks to our 2023 presenting sponsor, Florida Cancer Specialists & Research Institute (FCS), and our longtime partner, The Rotary Clubs of West Volusia.
“We couldn’t be more pleased to share that we are enthusiastically supporting the Florida Cancer Specialists Foundation as the successor non-profit organization of the ME STRONG 5k. And, in the tradition of the ME STRONG 5K, 100% of sponsorship funds raised from the 5K will be designated for financial support to local individuals navigating life with a cancer diagnosis.”
FCS Oncologist and FCS Foundation Board Chair, Maen Hussein, MD, said, “It is a tremendous honor for the FCS Foundation to participate with the sponsors and partners of the ME STRONG 5K. It will enable us to increase patient grants and support in DeLand and surrounding communities in Volusia County.”
FCS Oncologist Victor Melgen MD, who practices in DeLand, added, “ME STRONG has established a tradition of caring and support for cancer patients that is truly shared community-wide. FCS is privileged to again be the title sponsor for the event in 2023, particularly since proceeds will go to the FCS Foundation.”
Lynn Rasys, Executive Director of the FCS Foundation, added, “There is great synergy between our mission and the mission of ME STRONG. We are elated to carry on the great tradition of ME STRONG and look forward to welcoming participants and race spectators from Central Florida and across the country in February 2023.”

The Florida Cancer Specialists (FCS) Foundation provides financial support to qualified adult cancer patients in the state of Florida for expenses such as rent or mortgage, car payments and utility bills.
