Wellington, FL – April 24, 2017……… Despite the rain cancellation of the final match of the U.S. Open Polo Championship on Sunday, April 23, the Florida Cancer Specialist Foundation (FCSF) still came out a winner. FSCF is a non-profit 501c3 organization that provides financial assistance for non-medical living expenses to qualified cancer patients. The Foundation’s Polo Brunch, sponsored in part by the FCS physicians of Palm Beach County, was held at the prestigious International Polo Club Palm Beach in Wellington, FL, and raised over $60,000 for cancer patients and their families.
Brad Prechtl, CEO of Florida Cancer Specialists & Research Institute (FCS) and Board Chair of the FCS Foundation, said, “This one-of-a-kind fundraiser was truly amazing and helped raised awareness, as well as financial support, for the many cancer patients across the state who are in great need of financial assistance. The Foundation awards grants to qualifying patients to pay vital living expenses, such as rent, utilities or car payments, so they don’t have to worry so much about unpaid bills while they are fighting cancer.”
The exclusive Polo Brunch also attracted other FCS physicians from around the state, including Dr. Raul Storey, who has fond memories of his own polo “career” – and we use that term loosely, at the request of Dr. Storey!
“I played Polo when I was in Texas and Louisville,” said Dr. Storey. “And when I moved to Vero Beach, I played for a year, but the busy schedule of work pushed me away from it. I love the challenge of learning new things and working hard to achieve goals and that’s what Polo brings to my life: a rush of adrenaline that can be shared, playing with friends and the amazing horses, all working towards a mutual goal. I am not a very good player, but I enjoy riding and it definitely works as a stress reliever!”
Major sponsors of the Polo Luncheon included Genentech, Celgene and the Florida Cancer Specialists physicians in Palm Beach County: Dr. Todd Gersten, Dr. Howard Goodman, Dr. Robert Green, Dr. James Harris, Dr. Antonella Leary, Dr. Elisabeth McKeen, Dr. Carisa Pearce, Dr. Shachar Peles, Dr. Marilyn Raymond, Dr. Neal Rothschild, Dr. Napoleon Santos, Dr. Augustin Schwartz III, Dr. Avram Smukler, Dr. Daniel Spitz, Dr. Sumithra Vattigunta-Gopal and Dr. Gerald Zemel.
The Florida Cancer Specialists Foundation is a 501c3 not-for-profit organization assisting cancer patients in need throughout the state of Florida. Florida Cancer Specialists & Research Institute pays for FCSF staff salaries and overhead expenses, so that nearly 100% of all donations go directly to qualified cancer patients to pay for non-medical living expenses.
