The Power of Art – Healing & Hope Through Las Meninas
Bradenton, Fla., April 1, 2024 — The Florida Cancer Specialists (FCS) Foundation is thrilled to announce “The Power of Art – Healing & Hope Through Las Meninas,” a unique fundraising event celebrating the healing influence of the arts! The evening will feature a live auction of original ‘Las Meninas’ statues that are fashioned after the ‘Ladies in Waiting’ figures depicted in the iconic 1656 painting by Diego Velázquez. The art auction and reception will be held at 7:00 PM on April 20, 2024 at the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts in Orlando, Florida. Supporters can also go to FCSF.org/events/lasmeninas2024 to preview the sculptures and place an online bid. Online bidding closes at 7:00PM April 20, 2024 at the start of the event.
Professional artists from across Florida contributed their talent and countless hours to design, create and paint three-foot-high sculptures in various Florida Cancer Specialists & Research Institute (FCS) clinics across the state. They also led the artistic endeavors of hundreds of cancer patients, their families, physicians, staff, and volunteers, who collaborated closely with these professionals to create and paint the inspiring Meninas statues. The sculpture project was spearheaded by FCS Foundation Board Co-Chair Raul Storey, MD, a medical oncologist at the Vero Beach office of Florida Cancer Specialists. Dr. Storey is also the Co-Director of the Arts in Medicine pilot program at Florida Cancer Specialists, which provides arts activities to cancer patients during their treatment to uplift spirits and enhance healing.
“There are so many organizations and people who deserve the credit for the success of this first-of-its-kind event to benefit cancer patients and their families,” said Dr. Storey. “We are truly grateful to the University of Central Florida, Consul of Spain Jaime Lacadena and Macarena Lopez-Roberts, as well as Francisco Fernandez-Rubiera Honorary Consul of Spain (Orlando, FL), Rebeca Calvet from Club eXpats and my personal mentor, Dr. Jill Sonke, who is Research Director, Center for Arts in Medicine at the University of Florida (UF).”
Event Chair Lucio Gordan, MD, who is President and Managing Physician of Florida Cancer Specialists & Research Institute (FCS), added, “It’s an honor to chair this very special event. As an oncologist, I am delighted to see the expanding integration of the arts in medicine, especially since numerous studies have shown that art therapy has a positive effect on the quality of life and symptoms in cancer patients. Art-based programs can help reduce anxiety and create an environment that promotes physical and psychological healing.”
“Power of Art” marks the national debut of the Las Meninas Sculpture Project in the United States. Spanish artist and sculptor Antonio Azzato was inspired by the iconic Velázquez masterpiece and created larger than life-size statues that have been displayed on the streets of Madrid every fall since 2018. The statues are painted by various Spanish artists and celebrities and used to raise money for different charities. To continue the successful and positive spirit of the Las Meninas project in Madrid, Florida Cancer Specialists & Research Institute (FCS) and Healing Arts in Medicine brought Antonio Azzato’s vision to the United States for the first time.
Lynn Rasys, Executive Director of the FCS Foundation, said, “One of the highlights of the evening is the live collaborative painting experience, led by Natalia Thomaz, a multidisciplinary synesthete artist and art therapy practitioner. Every guest is invited to participate by lending their imaginative ideas and talents to create a new Menina statue. Named ‘Menina Radiant,’ this very special art work will be sold to the highest bidder in the finale of the live auction on April 20th.”
A limited number of tickets are available for “The Power of Art – Healing & Hope Through Las Meninas.” Tickets are $150 per person and may be purchased at FCSF.org/events/lasmeninas2024.
